Where Sekiro differs from its spiritual predecessors is that it’s less obtuse, with a linear, articulate narrative and the addition of more mainstream action-game elements. Whichever way you lean, you can’t question the meticulousness of Sekiro’s mechanics. Some see the severe combat as sadistic, others see it as a highly challenging, high rewarding experience that has no equal. If you’ve played Dark Souls or Bloodborne, you’ll know what awaits, and already have an idea of whether its unforgiving style is for you or not. Sekiro is a tense, tough, and visually striking samurai game set in a more mythical feudal Japan, and it's one of the best single-player games you can buy. BEST FREE SINGLE PLAYER STEAM GAMES AUG 2016 UPDATE
We'll update this roundup as we get more playing time with Steam's free gems (and duds). DOTA Underlords is a polished and highly promising free-to-play strategy game, but the RNG-heavy gameplay may turn off some potential players (plus, the game is still an Early Access title, so publisher Valve is still working out the kinks). Undefeated lets you play as a modern day superhero, but it is also limited in content. The Backrooms Game delivers ambient terror and an unnerving, maddening atmosphere, despite being an incredibly short title. Many of these games are too unpolished to add to this list, though some deserve honorable mention. In fact, over the past year, we have seen a surge of free titles hit the Steam review store. Keep in mind that Steam's library is massive, so this list is certainly not exhaustive. So why not venture out of your comfort zone and try something new? It won't cost you anything.
